Formula
Discount: discount = original price x discount percent / 100
Sale price: sale price = original price - discount
With VAT: total = sale price x (1 + VAT percent / 100)
The discount is removed first. VAT is then calculated on the reduced price only when the VAT option is enabled.
Worked example
Checking a 20% sale with VAT:
A $50 item with 10% off saves 50 x 0.10 = 5, so the sale price is $45. With 20% VAT, tax is 45 x 0.20 = 9, making the checkout total $54.

How do you calculate a discount? +
Calculate a discount by multiplying the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. A 20% discount on $100 saves $20.
How do you find the sale price after a discount? +
Find the sale price by subtracting the discount amount from the original price. If $100 has $20 off, the sale price is $80.
Is VAT applied before or after a discount? +
VAT is usually applied after the discount to the reduced taxable price. This calculator follows that common checkout flow.
What is 30% off? +
30% off means you pay 70% of the original price. For a $50 item, 30% off saves $15 and leaves a $35 sale price.
Can a discount be more than 100%? +
A retail discount should not exceed 100% because the item price cannot go below zero. This calculator keeps the final discounted price from becoming negative.
