Formula

Add VAT: VAT = net x rate / 100 and gross = net + VAT

Remove VAT: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100) and VAT = gross - net

The mode determines whether your input is treated as the pre-tax net amount or the tax-inclusive gross amount.

Worked example

Removing 20% VAT from a $120 receipt:

The net price is 120 / 1.20 = 100. The VAT amount is 120 - 100 = 20, so the receipt contains $20 in VAT.

FAQ

How do you add VAT to a price? +

Add VAT by multiplying the net price by the VAT rate divided by 100, then adding that tax amount to the net price.

How do you remove VAT from a price? +

Remove VAT by dividing the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. For 20% VAT, divide the gross price by 1.20.

What is the difference between net and gross price? +

Net price is the amount before VAT, while gross price is the amount after VAT. The VAT amount is the difference between them.

What is 20% VAT on 100? +

20% VAT on 100 is 20, making the gross total 120. Removing 20% VAT from 120 gives a net amount of 100.

Can this VAT calculator handle zero tax? +

Yes, a 0% VAT rate leaves the net and gross amounts the same. The VAT amount will show as zero.
