Formula

Tip: tip = bill x (tip percent / 100)

Total: total = bill + tip

Split: per person = total / people

The calculator keeps the bill and tip separate, then divides the full total by the number of people sharing it.

Worked example

Splitting an $85 dinner three ways:

An 18% tip on $85 is 85 x 0.18 = 15.30. The total is 85 + 15.30 = 100.30, and three people each pay 100.30 / 3 = 33.43.

FAQ

How do I calculate a tip? +

Calculate a tip by multiplying the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on $50 is $10.

What is a good tip percentage? +

A common tip is 18% to 20% for sit-down service in the United States. Adjust it for local customs, service quality, and whether fees are already included.

Should I tip before or after tax? +

Tip is usually calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. If your receipt only shows the final total, using that number still gives a close and generous estimate.

How do I split a tip between people? +

Split a tip by dividing the final bill, including tip, by the number of people. This calculator does that automatically once you enter the group size.

What does round up do? +

Round up raises the final total to the next whole currency amount. It is useful when you want an easier cash total or simpler group split.
