Formula
US federal income tax: progressive brackets on (gross − standard deduction). 2025 deduction: $15,000 single / $30,000 MFJ.
Social Security: 6.2% on wages up to $168,600.
Medicare: 1.45% on all wages + 0.9% on wages over $200k (single) / $250k (MFJ).
UK income tax: progressive on (gross − personal allowance). Allowance tapers by £1 per £2 over £100k.
UK NI Class 1: 8% on earnings £12,570–£50,270; 2% above £50,270.
Worked example
US, $75,000, single:
Taxable = $75,000 − $15,000 = $60,000. Tax ≈ $8,591. SS = $4,650. Medicare = $1,088. Net ≈ $60,671/yr ≈ $5,056/mo.
UK, £50,000:
Taxable = £50,000 − £12,570 = £37,430 × 20% = £7,486. NI = (£50,270−£12,570)×8% = £3,016. Net ≈ £39,498/yr ≈ £3,292/mo.
FAQ
Does this include state or city taxes? +
No. Version 1 covers US federal taxes only (income tax, Social Security, Medicare). State and local income taxes vary widely and are not included. Add them manually to your deductions.
Are pre-tax 401(k) or pension contributions handled? +
No. The calculation uses your gross salary as the starting point. To model pre-tax contributions, subtract them from gross before entering — they reduce your federal taxable income.
Which tax year is used? +
US figures use 2025 federal brackets and the $168,600 Social Security wage base. UK figures use the 2025/26 tax year with the £12,570 personal allowance and standard NI thresholds.
What is the UK personal allowance taper? +
For UK salaries above £100,000, the £12,570 personal allowance reduces by £1 for every £2 earned over £100,000. At £125,140 the allowance is fully withdrawn, creating an effective marginal rate of 60% in that band.
What is the Medicare surtax? +
The US Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% applies to wages over $200,000 for single filers ($250,000 for married filing jointly). The standard 1.45% Medicare rate applies to all wages regardless of level.
About this calculator
This take-home pay calculator estimates net salary after US federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare (2025), or UK income tax and National Insurance (2025/26). State, provincial, and local taxes are not included in v1. The UK personal allowance taper above £100,000 is fully modelled.
