Formula

GPA: Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Each course contributes quality points (grade × credits). The GPA is the total quality points divided by total credits — making higher-credit courses count proportionally more.

Worked example

Three courses — A (3 cr), B+ (3 cr), C (1 cr) on plus/minus scale:

Quality points: 4.0×3 + 3.3×3 + 2.0×1 = 12 + 9.9 + 2 = 23.9. Total credits: 7. GPA = 23.9 ÷ 7 = 3.41.

FAQ

What's the difference between cumulative and major GPA? +

Cumulative GPA includes every graded course you have taken. Major GPA counts only courses tagged as part of your major — some degree programmes and graduate school applications use it separately.

How do I convert a percentage grade? +

Select the "Percentage" scale and enter the numeric grade (e.g., 87). The calculator maps it to a 4.0 GPA point using a standard conversion table: 93–100 = 4.0, 90–92 = 3.7, 87–89 = 3.3, and so on down to below 60 = 0.0.

Are credits and credit hours the same? +

In US universities they are typically the same thing. Enter the number shown on your transcript for each course — usually 3 for a standard lecture course, 1–2 for labs or seminars.

Is my data saved? +

Yes. Your course list is saved to your browser's localStorage under a versioned key and restored the next time you visit. Nothing is sent to any server.

What does an A+ equal on the 4.0 scale? +

In the US plus/minus system, A+ is typically treated as 4.0 (some schools cap it there, others award 4.3). This calculator uses 4.0 for A+ to stay within the standard 4.0 scale.

About this calculator
